Oprah’s Year Off GLP-1: Lessons Learned
- I have not read Enough: Your Health, Your Weight, and What It’s Like To Be Free yet, but it’s officially at the top of my list. #paidlink
- Oprah is amazing. Full stop. But I have some thoughts.
Oprah’s Interview
on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle (Jan 2026)
Two big takeaways:
- Oprah wanted to prove the docs wrong so went off GLP-1 for a year and despite giving it everything she still gained 20lbs.
- “Enough Point”: GLP-1 can lower our body fat set point in our brain so that we lose weight without battling biology with willpower.
Enough point: how much food, how much fuel, how much fat your body wants you to store. And your body fights not matter what to try to get you to that. Unclear if this is just another terms for weight set point theory.
Good news? Oprah did the audio to her book so obviously I need to listen. #paidlink
Oprah starts off by sharing how she went off GLP-1 medications in 2025.
In that year, the weight creeped up 20 pounds despite regular 7 mile hikes and trying to be more mindful with food when she did experience food noise again.
As a GLP-1 Strategist & Mindset Coach, My Biggest Takeaways
As soon as she said “I went off GLP-1 for a year just to see if I could.” I *respectfully* rolled my eyes and thought “of course you did Oprah!”
This is exactly what I talk about in my GLP-1, Weight Regain, and the WHO: What “Progressive and Relapsing” Actually Means blog post. (Actually… Oprah needs to see that blog post!).
First off, Oprah was NOT getting off GLP-1 because she lost insurance coverage or she couldn’t continue the financial burden of these medications. That’s a completely different conversation.
Oprah – the Quintessential High Achiever
/ Over Achieving BRILLIANT woman on GLP-1 who knew these logical facts:
- Before GLP-1 medications she had food noise
- Food noise had a huge role in her struggle with Obesity
- GLP-1 are the reason she was able to lose the weight
- The data shows that regaining weight is likely when completely coming off these medications
- The diet and exercise did NOT work before GLP-1
And she thought: hm… Let me try to keep the weight off without GLP-1.
(which honestly, I know every high achiever is going to hold this belief true to their heart as they go through their weight loss journey.)
And what happened?
- Food noise returned
- She worked HARDDDDD at ignoring food noise and managing her meals and workout despite the GLP-1
- This concept of “enough point” that she uses where her body started to fight back against this lower weight and return to where it felt more comfortable.
- She still pushed on despite early signs of the weight creeping up and carried on this way for about a year!
Starting medications like Zepbound or Wegovy finally gave us an opportunity to stop fighting against ourselves to lose weight.
But we still hold on to this deep deep internal belief that if we get to our target weight, then theoretically we should be able to go back to the world before GLP-1 and fight our way through the noise and biology again.
Why are we (high achieving ladies) like this?!
She did this for ONE YEAR!
I’m honestly not surprised. I’m sure I would have done the same thing if fate hadn’t intervened and made me fully crash out and burn out several times so that I needed to find survival skills through woo principles of mindset work and deep introspection. (woo principles were my former beliefs, I now understand the research behind it)
Time for You to Decide
You can either take the opportunity to learn from Oprah’s experience and reconsider what your future in maintenance might realistically look like.
-OR-
You can do what Oprah did and try to “prove it” to the world that you will be the exception.
But at what cost??
Do you have 100% of your time and attention to return back to fighting that fight against your body?
This is such an important opportunity for us to process what Oprah is saying.
She’s saying “hey ladies! I tried! I tried really hard for all of us. And it sucked.” (obv, paraphrasing lol)
Do you hear that too?
Am I telling you that you have to stay on GLP-1 for life?
I’m not your doctor, so no, I’m saying that it’s time to use logic not fear to understand our future steps.
It’s time to FULLY accept that these medications are a part of our life now, not some short term fix.
Even those of you who feel that “I’m not here for a short term fix!”…
If you are actively considering completely weaning off these medications as your number 1 plan for maintenance (outside of reasonable reasons such as financial hardship/change in medical risks ie. pregnancy or complications) then you are actively deciding to go back in time and hope things are magically different.
Will there be people who can successfully wean off these medications?
Sure! People win the lottery…
But I wouldn’t plan on quitting my job just because I buy a lottery ticket once a week at the local gas station. (for the record, I do not buy lottery tickets. I’m just trying to make a point here.)
If you don’t believe Oprah or me, maybe you’ll trust what the World Health Organization said about Obesity?
This is exactly why my trainings inside the GLP-1 Strategy Lab Membership has you work through the mindset layers of your journey and then build up your strategy and habits to sustain you for life.
That’s why the women inside my membership are already challenging themselves to see what their actual future needs to look like. And creating a plan to make it last. They aren’t working off misconceptions or fear, they are staying rooted in logic and research to come up with each of their own unique plans.
Would you like me to hand you the exact blueprint to doing that as well?
